Decorate Your Home With Rocks

Decorating with rocks sets off your home decorating style, whether you're going for country cottage, rustic, eclectic, or the latest in natural and green decor. A key to successful decorating is to start with a mood or theme. You may use earth-tone rocks to create a calm mood based on a spa or Zen inspiration, or energize a room with light-catching crystals and colorful rock displays.

Rock and Mineral Displays

Lighted display cases show off rocks, minerals specimens and fossils while protecting them from handling and dust. Certain rock formations and minerals are fragile. Their textures and minute crystals shouldn't be touched. Appealing rocks from vacations or your yard display well in baskets or decorative bowls. Clear jars and bowls allow more rocks to show. If you have a lot of small rocks, layer them in tall jars in a parfait effect. Small children and dogs sometimes may eat rocks, so keep small rocks out of their reach.

Rock Focal Points

Customizing a fountain with rocks creates a highlight for your home decor. Many rocks show their colors best when they're wet. Any kind of hard rock that isn't prone to crumbling is fine for fountain use. Rocks that fall apart can damage the fountain's pump. Geodes, rocks with crystals inside them, make dynamic focal points for any room. Rock vendors sell large specimens and stands for them. Geodes display well on the coffee table, mantel, vanity, desk, sofa table, entertainment center, bookshelves and entryway console table. Self-adhesive felt protects furniture from damage.

Dish Gardens and Houseplants

Rocks add a realistic touch to miniature landscapes in dish gardens and terrariums. Crystals nestled between succulents, colorful gemstones such as lapis lazuli, carnelian and tiger's eye arranged between cacti, or smooth beach stones forming patterns on the soil in a flowerpot add another dimension to nature displayed in your home. Very small stones work well to create dry creek beds and waterfalls in miniature gardens. Lava rock, naturally porous rock from volcanoes, provides an attractive mulch for potted plants, adding red or black to the top of the soil and helping retain moisture.

Rock Accessories

Cleverly carved stonework from all over the world enhances every room of the home. A mortar and pestle for the kitchen, stone bowls for the dining room table, stone statues for the living room, a stone replica of the round Mayan calendar for the bedroom, stone vases for the hall, and a stone bench for the entryway are some options. A rock bathmat offers a spa look and a foot massage. Homemade rock accessories, such as a picture frame enhanced with glued-on rocks, save resources and money while fitting with the rock decor.
